So what exactly is Ghost Hunting? Well the actual definition is "...the process of investigating locations that are reported to be haunted by ghosts..." not, as the term suggests, running around with huge backpacks trying to trap ghosts in 'containment units' like in Ghostbusters! Ghost Hunting means different things to different people. Some people come on investigations to try to gain some solid proof as to whether ghosts exist whilst others come in hope of communicating with the other side. Whatever your stance on the paranormal or your reason everyone is most welcome to come along.
For those of you who haven't experienced an investigation before you are bound to have a few questions about what happens so we have put together a few of the most frequently asked questions and answers for you to have a look through. If you have a question that isn't in this list, please do not hesitate to contact us and a member of the team will be more than happy to answer your question.
What are ghosts?
OK, so lets start at the beginning - what are ghosts? Well no-one knows for certain. There are many theories to explain the thousands upon thousands of documented experiences that have been reported from all over the world since the beginning of recorded history. Ghosts and hauntings seem to be a relatively common part of the human experience and there appear to be several types of ghosts or hauntings so maybe more than one theory might be needed to explain them all.
People all over the world, from different religions and in all walks of life believe different things with regards to what ghosts and spirits are and whether they actually exist or are simply figments of our imaginations. But perhaps the most widely believed theory is that Ghosts, or spirits as they are often called, are the spirit energy or soul of person who has passed away who have become stuck between this plane of existence and the next, usually as a result of some tragedy or trauma. Sometimes also known as "intelligent hauntings," these spirits seem to be stuck in some kind of limbo state in which they 'haunt' the scenes of their deaths or places where they were particularly happy in life. Very often, these types of ghosts seem to be, on some level, aware of the living and are able to interact.
What are 'Orbs'?
I am sure that, at some point, you have taken a photograph which, when looked at, has a strange round smudge or ball in it. Sometimes this is due to dust or moisture in the air that is captured in the flash of your camera but in some cases paranormal investigators believe that this could be a manifestation of a spirit.
Ghost lights, sometimes called Will-o'-the-wisp, have been reported in ghost stories and folk lore for many hundreds of years most often around areas of boggy or wet land around twilight so is this really the spirit of the swamp luring unwary travellers to their doom or could it just be natural phenomenon?
What happens on a ghost hunt?
When you arrive at the location a member of the I Spy Team will meet you and show to the 'hub' or base room. This will be our base for the night so if you feel uncomfortable at any point or just need five minutes out you will be able to return to this room.
When all of our guests have arrived we will have a short talk to introduce the team, go through important health and safety information and answer any questions you may have about the evening. We will then introduce you to the equipment that we use and hand out pieces of equipment for you to use throughout the evening.
We then take you on a lit walk around of the location so that you can get your bearings, during which we will tell you a little bit about the history of the location. We don't tell you too much about what other people have previously experienced as we feel that this can sometimes influence what you actually experience.
We will then return to the hub room, split into smaller groups and then go off to carry out vigils etc. in different areas of the location. Don't worry, if you have come as part of a group we will always do our best to keep you together.
Will I actually see a ghost?
Unfortunately we can't guarantee that you will see a ghost or experience anything paranormal as unfortunately spirits don't perform on demand however we choose our locations carefully having first conducted site visits to ensure that the chances of you experiencing are high.
What should I bring with me to a ghost hunt?
Just bring yourself! You may also want to bring a torch as we will be carrying out the majority of the investigation in the dark and its quite nice to be able to flick on a torch if you feel a little uneasy at any time. It is also quite helpful to find your way around however if you don't have a torch or forget to bring one we do have torches you can borrow for the evening. You are also welcome to bring cameras and video cameras and any other personal equipment that you would like to use.
What should I wear?
Quite often the locations we investigate are old and drafty so we would recommend that you wear warm clothes. It's also advisable to wear sensible shoes as there may be uneven floors, stairs and sometimes we may even be outside. Your safety and comfort are paramount so please help us to help you.
Are refreshments provided?
Refreshments such as tea, coffee and squash will be available in the hub room throughout the evening and sandwiches, crisps and biscuits will be provided during the half way point of the evening at most locations. Sometimes, due to lack of facilities, we are unable to provide refreshments but we will let you know if this is not the case when you book. At some locations an evening meal is also included in the price of the investigation and this will also be detailed when you book.
Is accommodation provided?
Accommodation is not included in the price of the ghost hunt unless otherwise specified.
